Tributes pour in at the death of local hero, Mark Ryan (41)

Mark Ryan
The Waterford community has been left in shock at the death of Mark James Ryan, of Castleplace, Railway Square, Waterford city, and formerly of Priory Lawn, Ballybeg, on Thursday, October 19.
Only a few weeks ago Mark, aged 41, displayed his heroic and nurturing character when he saved three tourists who had fallen into the River Suir. Mark jumped into the water and brought the three to safety, and ensured that they were looked after following the incident.
Speaking on his brother’s heroics at the time, John Ryan said Mark did not want notoriety, and wanted only to keep people safe and prevent similar incidents from occurring again, a testament to his caring nature.
Mark was a regular at Cill Barra Sports Centre and Spririt Leisure Centre, and swam in the sea all year round.
A message of condolence from RIP.ie reads: “To all of Mark’s family my sincere condolences to you all at this sad time. Mark was a lovely person, would always stop to have a chat, never pass without a hello or a few words.” Another says: “Mark was such a lovely chap, and very polite, my thoughts are with his family at this sad time.” Mark will repose at Thompson’s Funeral Home, Barrack Street, Waterford city on Monday (October 23) from 7pm to 8.30pm with vigil prayers and rosary at 8pm. Requiem Mass will take place on Tuesday in St. Saviour’s Church, Ballybeg at 10am, followed by burial in St. Otteran’s Cemetery.
Family flowers only please, donations if desired to the Solas Cancer Support Centre or the Irish Heart Foundation.
Mark, who is predeceased by his parents Mary and Liam, is sadly missed by his loving daughter Lauren, son Jordan, sisters Claire, Lynda and Aoife, brother John, Ciara, Hayley, stepson David, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.
May he Rest in Peace.
