Obituary: Remembering the late David Taffe, a lifelong Waterford supporter

The late David Taffe.

The death has occurred of David 'Davy' Taffe, Kilcohan, Waterford and formerly of Congress Place, Waterford, who passed away on Monday, May 14, 2026, aged 80 years.

Born on August 31, 1945, David was a lifelong Waterford man who was raised in Congress Place and remained deeply connected to his community throughout his life.

His funeral took place from Thompson’s Funeral Home to the Sacred Heart Church, The Folly, where Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr. Jerry Chestnutt on Monday, May 18, with readings by Gary Gordon and Shane Power, and Prayers of the Faithful offered by Reece and Ryan Gordon, Danielle Moran and Mary Langford.

The ceremony was beautifully accompanied by soloist Vanessa Whelan, with a heartfelt eulogy delivered by Cameron Gordon. David was laid to rest in Kilbarry Cemetery.

David was formerly employed with the Paper Mills and H.P. Chemie and was widely respected for his strong work ethic and community spirit. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Kathleen, with whom he shared 65 devoted years of marriage, and who sadly passed away just nine months before David.

A man known to all as a true gentleman, David was first and foremost a devoted family man who always placed his loved ones at the centre of his life.

He took immense pride and joy in his role as a grandfather, especially to his four grandsons, and was happiest in their company - whether it was strolling with them, playing in the garden, or cheering them on from the sidelines.

He was deeply involved in charitable work and served as chairman of the Irish Kidney Association for many years.

A passionate sports supporter, David was a loyal Manchester United and Waterford (Blues) fan, travelling on many occasions to support both teams at home and in Old Trafford.

He also had a great love for hurling, enjoyed a good pint of Guinness, and treasured his trips to Spain.

Known affectionately as “Davy,” he built strong friendships across Waterford, and will be fondly remembered for his warm personality, generous spirit, engaging chats, and ever-present sense of humour.

He is deeply mourned and will be sadly missed by his loving family, including his daughter Belinda, son Niall, son-in-law Derek, and his adored grandchildren Cameron, Ryan, Reece, Leon and Codie, as well as his extended family, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, neighbours and wide circle of friends.

May he rest in heavenly peace.
