Obituary: Remembering the late Pat O’Mahony of Waterford's De La Salle College

The late Pat O'Mahony.

We remember the late Pat O’Mahony, Grantstown Village, Waterford, and also of Newrath, Co. Kilkenny, and Bruree, Co Limerick - former Vice Principal of De La Salle College, Waterford city.

Pat passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and in the tender care of the wonderful staff of The Oak Ward, UHW, on February 2, 2026.

Pat dedicated his entire teaching career to De La Salle College, Waterford city, serving the school community with distinction from 1962 until his retirement in 2006.

He was a devoted English teacher, a committed Year Head, and later Deputy Principal.

A true La Sallian, Pat lived the ethos of De La Salle in all his interactions with staff, students, parents, and the wider school community.

Tributes flowed in following Pat’s passing from his former students, who recounted his excellence as a teacher, and also his kindness and fairness, with his students - including those whom he supervised at after school study, or served in the tuck shop or book shop - holding him in high regard.

As well as those he taught throughout his 44-year career, he was also fondly remembered by those he worked alongside over many decades.

Pat’s Requiem Mass took place on arrival at St. Mary’s Church, Ballygunner, on Friday, February 6, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Pre-deceased by his parents Michael and Hannah and his brothers and sisters, Pat is sadly missed by his loving wife Máire, sons Michael and Colm, daughters Catherine and Niamh, daughters-in-law Siobhan and Viviane, sons-in-law Seán (Murphy) and Seán (McMahon), grandchildren Joe, Orla, Faye, Niamh, Hannah, Patrick, Ava, Maeve, Cian, Ciaran and Áine, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Pat’s family would like to extend their thanks for the heartfelt condolences and support received during this difficult time. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
