Obituary: Remembering the late Oliver Walshe of Dungarvan and Waterford Crystal
The late Oliver Walshe
We record with feelings of deep sorrow the passing of Oliver (Ollie) Walshe, aged 77 years, of Ballymacmague, Dungarvan, and formerly of Cannon Street, Waterford city and Waterford Crystal, on September 3, 2026, in the tender care of the staff at University Hospital Waterford and The Oak Ward, Dunmore Wing.
Oliver is predeceased by his parents William and Margaret, brother John, sisters Anne Delaney and Rose Roche.
A proud native of 92, Cannon Street, Waterford, Ollie was employed as a skilled Master Cutter at both Waterford and Dungarvan Crystal and subsequently Tipperary Crystal, Killarney Crystal and Flagship Communications. Wherever Ollie worked he was hugely popular and lifelong friendships were made.
He later took up a post with Kiely’s Funeral Directors in Dungarvan where his professionalism, kindness and sensitivity was a huge comfort to so many people during the difficult days of a family funeral.
A man who loved the great outdoors, Ollie spent many hours tending his beautiful garden and looked forward to going fishing or shooting, playing a round of golf with friends or attending horse racing meetings throughout the country. A great friend, Ollie was the life and soul of any gathering and his good humour and sense of fun made him great company.
Ollie’s deep Catholic faith was hugely important to him, he attended Mass regularly and was a Minister of the Eucharist at St. Mary’s Parish Church.
Ollie lived the Gospel message in his daily life and he was always ready to help those in need, his innate decency and kindness always shone through.
Even though Ollie is gone now from this earthly dwelling he will always be remembered by the love of his life, Dina (nee Hickey). Ollie and Dina were married for nearly 52 years. Ollie is also deeply mourned by his brother Willie and sister Florence Twamley, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends.
Ollie lay in repose at The Kiely Funeral Home, Dungarvan, on Friday evening, September 4. The huge numbers of people who came from near and far to remember Ollie are a fitting testament to the high esteem in which he was held. Funeral Prayers were led by Fr. Matt Cooney O.S.A. Also present was Fr. John Harris Adm.
Concelebrated Requiem Mass for the happy repose of Ollie’s soul was offered on Saturday morning, September 5, in St. Mary's Parish Church, Dungarvan, by Monsignor Willie Ryan P.P. (Chief Celebrant), Fr. Tom Flynn P.E., Fr. Michael Kennedy P.E., Fr. Matt Cooney O.S.A. and Fr. Pat Butler.
Ollie’s favourite piece of music Una Furtiva Lagrima was played during the funeral procession following the Prayers of Commendation.
Afterwards, Ollie was laid to rest in St. Otteran's Cemetery, Ballinaneeshagh, Cork Road, Waterford, in the presence of a large concourse of mourners.
