Obituary: Remembering the late Peter O'Brien of Rice Park, Waterford

The late Peter O'Brien.

The death occurred on June 5, 2026, of Peter O'Brien, Rice Park, Waterford City, and formerly of Clyde Shipping Company and Bell Lines.

Peter was predeceased by his parents Catherine and Frank, his sister Ann, brothers Paul, Mickey, Beechie (Tony), Frankie and Paddy, brothers-in-law Tommy Keating and Mickey Fitzgerald, sister-in-law Ann O'Brien, and nephew Mark Keating.

Born into a large and close-knit family, Peter lived a full and remarkable life. At just 17 years of age, he set sail aboard an oil tanker, beginning an adventure that took him around the world and provided him with a lifetime of stories and cherished memories.

His years at sea reflected his adventurous spirit and love of life.

He later worked with Clyde Shipping Company and Bell Lines, where he earned the respect of colleagues through his strong work ethic, dependability and good humour.

Above all else, Peter was devoted to his family. For many years, he was regarded as the patriarch of the O'Brien family, offering strength, wisdom and guidance to generations of relatives. He took immense pride in his family and was always ready with advice, encouragement or a listening ear. His kindness, warmth and gentle nature left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Peter bore his final illness with great dignity and was cared for with exceptional compassion by the staff of Medical 6 at University Hospital Waterford and the Oak Ward of the South East Palliative Care Team.

He reposed at Tom Hennessy's Funeral Home, Johnstown, on Monday, June 8, before his Requiem Mass was celebrated in St. John's Church, Parnell Street, Waterford, on Tuesday, June 9. Following Mass, cremation took place at The Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork.

He was deeply mourned and sadly missed by his loving sisters Helen, Cathy, Mary and Biddy, brothers Willie, Christy and Kevin, sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.

The large attendance at his funeral was a testament to the esteem in which Peter was held. While his passing left a great void in the lives of those who loved him, his family took comfort in the many happy memories he created and the enduring legacy of love, generosity and quiet wisdom he leaves behind.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
