Residents 'very happy' in Mooncoin care centre, says HIQA report
Mooncoin Residential Care Centre.
Residents living in the Mooncoin Residential Care Centre spoke about feeling 'very happy' with life inside the premises, according to a new report.
The Health Information & Quality Authority (HIQA) published its findings into the facility after making an unannounced visit last April.
There were 74 residents living at the centre on the day of the inspection.
Inspectors reviewed the premises and spoke with a number of residents about their day-to-day lives there.
The report read: "Residents were highly complimentary of the centre, the staff, the quality of the care and activities provided. During the day, the inspector met with many of the 74 residents living in the centre and spoke to eight resident and two visitors in more detail."
One resident told inspectors: "The staff see me as a person and are so kind”.
The centre was praised by residents for the variety of activities, quality of home-cooked meals and level of care. The report noted the efficiency of the staff: "The staffing and skill mix on the day of inspection was appropriate to meet the care needs of residents. Residents were seen to be receiving support in a timely manner, such as providing assistance at meal times and responding to requests for support."
The report stated that the centre had received no complaints since the last visit in November 2025. It stated: "Residents spoken with were aware of how to make a complaint and who to make a complaint to. However, the complaints procedure was not fully accessible to the residents."
The centre was deemed 'Substantially Compliant' in terms of complaint procedure.
The centre was also marked as 'Substantially Compliant' in Governance and management, and Premises. In the latter category, the report highlighted some poorly maintained flooring and wood finishings, an ill-fitted corridor door and water damage to an ensuite.
The report stated that there was a lack of specificity in governance and management: "While an ongoing continuous cycle of audits was conducted to monitor the quality of care delivered, the actions identified from some audits were not specific enough to drive quality improvement on a system-wide level.
"A sample of observations of care audits viewed, recorded repeated negative findings and there was no corrective action plan developed."
Mooncoin Residential Care Centre was issued several directives by HIQA to solve the issues, including the replacement of flooring.
