Recently, Waterford City and County Council commissioned a report into an incident involving two children falling through the balcony of the Council-owned Mount Suir Manor apartment block.

On the morning of Friday, March 20, a three-year-old and a seven-year-old were playing on the balcony of their apartment in Block C of Mount Suir Manor, when one of the balcony’s windowpanes fell. One of the children suffered a brain bleed, whilst the other suffered minor injuries.

The report recommended a comprehensive structural and condition survey of the building.

Speaking last week, Cllr Joe Kelly, asked what would happen to residents should they be moved out of the block to accommodate remediation works.

“We have very little properties available if it becomes necessary to move residents out of Mount Suir," he said.

Cllr Kelly suggested moving residents who are interested in being moved into Virginia Crescent, a property on Hennessey's Road, which was formerly used by Ukrainian refugees.

Director of Housing with Waterford Council, Seamus De Faoite said: “We have a detailed report back in relation to balconies, which is being reviewed at the moment in relation to possibilities.

“We’ll also be looking at a detailed survey of vacant properties that we have and all that will feed into our decision. No decision has been made yet if there is any requirement or need to move anyone into another property, but we’re looking at options if needs be.”
