The three-month curated summer festival, Summer in The City, will return to Waterford in June, running until August.

The festival offers a diverse array of performative arts and events across various locations in Waterford City, including The Apple Market, John Roberts Square and O’Connell Street.

Featuring free outdoor music concerts and activities, the family-friendly festival aims to showcase an entertaining array of local and national talent.

A summer of original music will play each weekend in the Cultural Quarters, with free classes in the WCQ on Saturdays.

Markets, activities, theatre, food, dancing and more is planned.

Rising costs

Festival Director and Programmer at Summer in the City, Anna Jordan, has organised an online fundraiser this year, to help support the festival.

Writing on the GoFundMe page, she said: “Summer in the City is a three month summer music and community festival in Waterford City. Each weekend the city streets comes alive with free music, theatre, science and history talks, umbrella festivals, poetry and literature, dance, children's activities and that's only a few aspects. We really are the place to visit each year."

She added that the festival has become increasingly difficult to maintain due to rising costs.

“Unfortunately our overheads are rising but our budget stays the same.

Each year we like to open up community inclusiveness where we support artists and Acts financially. Unfortunately we are struggling.

“Your donation could help cover transport, artist fees, a t-shirt being printed, the promotion of original artists, advertisement, accommodation, stages being built, sound technicians, water for acts to merely name a few things.

“Summer in the City is an entirely free festival for three whole months. Please help support this magic. Every donation will go back into the project and will be entirely appreciated.”

The fundraiser has a €2,000 goal, with €500 raised at time of publication.

June Programme

Despite cost concerns, the festival officially gets underway this month.

Next week, Penny Royal and Visa Required will be playing at The Apple Market and John Robert Square on Friday June 14.

On Saturday, acts include the High Hopes Choir, Apple Art Sale, Street Sounds, Mark Atkins, Conor Clancy, Brass & Co, Sal, Gaeilge Le Spraoi, High Definition and DJ John Keane.

On Sunday June 16, Steve & Fergal will play at 5pm at the Apple Market.
