Waterford councillors from the Comeragh district this week commended Comeragh Rangers for their historic win over Ballymacarbry, ending their 42-year reign as Waterford ladies football champions.

Cllr Seanie Power, founding member of Comeragh Rangers, said this week in the council chamber that it was "an outstanding win".

“It was a very special night for me as one of the founding members of the Comeragh Rangers ladies football club going back 25 years ago. I can’t say how over the moon I am and I need to give a special mention to two girls who were involved in the team who I’m delighted for."

Cllr Power commended club stalwarts Nora Dunphy and Ruth Kirwan for their years of service. Both have been involved since the club’s inception.

Cllr Power also acknowledged the work of his brother Ger Power, manager of the team, all of the selection committee and the players.

Cllr Power added, ”I have to also commend Ballymacarbry. They have inspired so many teams down through the years and it was the inspiration of Ballymacarbry ladies football that Comeragh Rangers started, so I’m sure they’ll be back again fighting next year.”

All the sitting councillors of the Comeragh district wished to be associated with the congratulations.

Cllr Catherine Burke said: “I’d also like to congratulate Comeragh rangers and I’m lucky to have a family member playing on the team. I know for a fact Ballymacarbry will be back up and running and commiserations."

Cllr Liam Brazil added: “They are 10 years in the running to win this and it's great to see them win now because they put some work in and for Ballymacarbry, to win 42 years is a great achievement.”

Cllr John O’Leary also congratulated both sides, saying: “It's extraordinary that Comeragh Rangers were beaten in 12 county finals, but kept going and have now been successful.”

Cllr Declan Clune added: “It’s great that Comeragh Rangers won and it’s also important to recognize Ballymacarbry, so congratulations to both teams and I think it's setting up for an exciting season next year.”
