There was great excitement recently in one area in County Waterford recently when people gathered to participate in a community event.
The Tourin Table Quiz was a great success and the organisers were delighted with its success. The event was held to raise money towards the renovation of the local hall.
There were 15 tables of participants, which was held in the Sportsman's Bar, and the organisers were very appreciative of the support from throughout the locality.
One of the organisers commented: "By 9pm the quiz packs had been distributed, table numbers allocated and entry fees collected, and everyone was in their places with pens poised for action."
"Our quiz master Edward Lynch eager to get the event underway, took up his position to announce the commencement of the event and we were off," she said.
"Will, Finola and Gina, now seasoned experts, soon got into a rhythm of correcting and posting the results up on the board," she added.
"Edward kept the crowd on their toes with his quiz questions, with a great mix of general knowledge, curiosities and fun; nobody felt like the class dud."
There were prizes for first and second and an additional fun element of ‘name your team’ was added in, with a spot prize for the most inventive name.
"This added an extra entertainment level to the event and with a few repeats from last year’s events," said one of the organisers. The winning team of that particular aspect of the night was 'The Smarty Pints'.

The overall list of results in order of team number was composed of: 1. Charlies Angels (54); 2. Smarty Pints (41); 3. Lismore Brains (55); 4. The Four Skins (60); 5. HAM (31); 6. Adidas (38); 7. Winners Enclosure (46); 8. Sloping (49); 9. Sham-rocks (33); 10. Outlaws (45); 11. Batmen (49); 12. The Randoms (54); 13. Lucky 13 (48); 14. Anonymous 1 (33); 15. Anonymous 2 (25). It was a very close contest and at the end of the main quiz the trop three scores were 54, 55 and 60. The winners, were last year’s winners, who contested their title up to the very last round.
"A very close second on 55 points were the Lismore Brains and in joint third place was Charlies Angels and The Randoms – only a point behind the second placed team," said one of the organisers.
The outright winners of the 'Brains of Tourin Award' was Team No. 4 – 'The Four Skins', composed of Jen, Linda and Christine Collender, and Kevin McCarthy. The runners up team, The Lismore Brains, was composed of Marie Doocey, Helen Hardiman, Martina and Denis O’Keefe.
There was also a raffle held on the night with some great prizes up for grabs. A significant aspect to that was the fact the organisers decided not to seek sponsorship and as a result were extremely grateful to all the committee members who donated items to make up the hampers on offer. There were also a couple of vouchers on offer from some local businesses.

The raffle results were composed of: Joanne Leahy – Hamper; Helen McGrath – Hamper; Linda Bennett – Voucher; Colin c/o Mick Ormonde - Hamper; Mary Henessey – Lotions and potions; Damien Lonergan - Hamper; Michael Meaney - Chocolates; Brian O’Donoghue - Hamper; Brendan McGrath – Voucher; Christine Good – Snuggle top; Sean Meaney – chocolates; Rachel Geary - Chocolates.
The organisers expressed gratitude to John O’Rourke and the staff in the Sportsman’s Bar for the venue and hospitality and the food provided at the interval. Everyone was also appreciative of quiz maestro, Edward Lynch, for doing a fantastic job.
The organising committee was also acknowledged within the community and one local commenting: "Finally, a massive thanks to all the committee. A special thanks to Will who is the ‘main man’ for this event and the work behind the scenes is appreciated."
"Everyone of the committee gives 100 per cent for each event so many thanks for the work on the night and in the previous weeks gathering items for raffle and the prep work involved."
