The late Breda Walsh.

It is with great sadness that the Walsh family announce the death of Mrs Breda Walsh, late of Pinewood Avenue, Hillview, who passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025, in her 97th year, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Cork in 1929, Breda spent a happy and much-loved childhood in Garrandarragh, Mullinavat. Following her marriage to her devoted husband Tony Walsh, the couple moved to Waterford City, where they spent 30 wonderful years raising their family in St John’s Park. Together they reared eight children: Eamonn, Brendan, Bernadette, Oliver, Fintan, Imelda (RIP), Miriam, and Paula.

Breda and Tony were deeply involved in parish life, and their home was always a place of welcome. Renowned for Breda’s beautiful home baking, the kettle was forever on, and the door always open to friends, neighbours, Christian Brothers, nuns, and priests. Everyone was welcomed for a chat, warmth, and kindness.

Breda worked in Raytex, Kilcohan for many years.

A turn of good fortune saw Breda win a bungalow in the Sacred Heart Parish draw, after which the family moved to Hillview, where they enjoyed 40 happy years among wonderful neighbours and friends. In September 2024, due partly to Breda’s mobility needs, she and Tony made the decision to move to Mooncoin Residential Care Centre.

The exceptional care, kindness, dignity, and respect shown by the staff there was a gift beyond measure to the family, for which they will be forever grateful. Breda had no other health issues and passed peacefully and contentedly, simply of old age, with Tony and her family by her side.

December was a particularly kind month, filled with visits from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, sharing memories, stories, laughter, and celebrating a life truly well lived.

Breda was a gifted and passionate craftswoman, with her hands always busy. She was widely admired for her beautiful crochet work - creating countless ponchos and blankets, and even two magnificent wedding dresses. Her Carrickmackross lace and Mountmellick embroidery earned her many competition awards. One of her most treasured achievements was a framed “Our Father” piece, which was proudly presented to St Beacon’s Church on her behalf.

A founding member of Samaritans Waterford, Breda was trained by the Cork branch and gave an extraordinary 41 years of dedicated service. A natural listener, she answered countless calls, offering comfort and support to people in their most difficult moments.

She was a proud advocate for the organisation, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in March. Breda also devoted over 30 years to the Society of St Vincent de Paul, where many will fondly remember her from the shop - sorting clothes and greeting customers with a warm smile on Tuesday and Saturday mornings.

Breda lived at home for 95 years, lovingly cared for by her devoted husband Tony.

Married for an incredible 73 years and 10 months, their life together was a true testament to love and partnership. Daughters Miriam and Paula were especially proud to support and care for their parents, enabling them to remain at home for so long. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all healthcare professionals, home care assistants, and, in particular, Dr Sharon O’Donnell, for their outstanding care and support.

Breda was laid to rest in St Beacon’s Cemetery following a beautiful and dignified service celebrated by Fr Barron. She now rests peacefully at home once again in Mullinavat. Breda loved flowers, and the family were deeply touched by the many beautiful bouquets received.

Many people took to RIP.ie to express their sympathies to Breda's family.

Doc and Marian Nolan wrote: "What a lovely lady, always had a word for everyone."

Pat Fallon from New Ross wrote: "Sincere sympathies to Tony and all Breda's family. I knew Breda from her time in Beau St., a great volunteer. May she rest in peace."

Teresa and Harry Quinlan from Hillview wrote: "Sincere condolences to Breda's husband Tony, daughters and sons and extended family on your sad loss. We have known Breda for over 50 years, she was one of a kind. Rest in peace. Thinking of you all at this very difficult time. And especially at Christmas time."

Mary Ahearne wrote: "So sad to see Mrs Walsh has passed over to the other side. I lived across the road from her in Hillview, she was such a lovely lady and great neighbour. I send my sincere sympathy to her family at this very sad time."

Tony and the Walsh family sincerely thank all who offered condolences, sent cards, and shared kind words during this time.

Breda’s life was truly celebrated, and she will be remembered always as the strong, kind woman she was - deeply loved and greatly missed.
