Former Waterford TD and Labour stalwart Brian O'Shea passes away aged 81

Former Waterford Labour TD Brian O’Shea passed away on January 28, aged 81.
Throughout a storied political career that spanned over four decades from 1989 to 2011, O’Shea served as Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health.
Born in Waterford, Brian was educated at Mount Sion CBS and St. Patrick’s College, Dublin.
He worked as a teacher before he began his first foray into local politics, running a successful election campaign for Tramore Town Council in 1979.
His first experience in Leinster House came in the Seanad in 1987, serving on the Industrial Panel.
Brian passed away peacefully in the company of his family at Killure Bridge Nursing Home.
He will repose at Thompson's Funeral Home, Barrack Street, on Friday, January 30, from 7-8:30pm. Rosary will take place at 8pm.
His funeral cortege will walk from his residence on Saturday, January 31, to the Holy Cross Church, Tramore, Co Waterford for Requiem Mass on arrival at 10am. Burial will be held in St. Declan’s Cemetery, Riverstown, Tramore.
Mass will be livestreamed at 10am.
He is survived by his wife Eileen, sons John and Paddy, daughters Christine, Anne, Siobhán and Mary, brother Seán, his in-laws, and 12 grandchildren.
Former Labour TD Ciara Conway succeeded Brian as Waterford’s Labour TD from 2011-2016.
She paid tribute to the Labour great, writing: “Throughout his years of public service, Brian gave so much to Waterford — working tirelessly for the community, advocating for people who needed a voice, and leaving a legacy of commitment, integrity and genuine care for the place he served.
“That contribution will be remembered with respect and gratitude by many across the county.
“I hope it is some comfort to know that his work made a real difference in people’s lives and that his legacy will endure. My thoughts are with you and your family, and I wish you strength and peace in the days ahead.”
