‘Not a cent’ of Government funding making its way into Larchville/Lisduggan

Calls have been made for elected Government members to be more proactive in addressing deprived areas such as Larchville and Lisduggan in Waterford city.
In the 2022 Pobal Deprivation Index, Larchville and Lisduggan were classed as 'extremely disadvantaged'.
Cllr John Hearne told the Waterford News & Star this week that the community has been working hard to enhance the area, however they are receiving no help from Government:
“Larchville/Lisduggan is listed year in year out as the most deprived area in the whole of Ireland and nothing is being done by Government. We’ve been consistently at the bottom of the pile and for 30 years Government have known this.
"When there was no money in the country you could forgive it, but the country is awash with money now, so there’s no excuse."
Cllr Hearne said that the local Community Hall roof has been in a state of disrepair for 10 years and work is also needed on the Manor St. John building.
“They haven’t fixed the hall, they haven’t fixed the Manor St. John building and they don’t put money into the clubs in the area. The council and Government parties won’t take responsibility. They do nothing to raise the area, we don’t get a cent, so we’re raising up the community ourselves so that we can raise the people up with it.”
Cllr Hearne commended the local community for vastly enhancing the area in recent years despite lack of funding.
Recent successful projects include the revitalisation of the Knight’s Templar graveyard which was achieved through the voluntary efforts of locals, the upkeep of Kilbarry cemetery, Central Avenue Garden, and the planting of trees, shrubs and flowers in many areas of the parish.
In recognition of this work, the community took top honours in the Urban Neighbourhood category at the National Pride of Place Awards in 2023.
“We have a free gym for old folks, we paint the houses, we have disability friendly gardens, we have a graveyard project, so its all good stuff, but the Government don’t do anything for us,” Cllr Hearne said.
Another such example of community efforts, is the St Paul’s Parish Frank Leahy 5 Mile Run/3 Mile Walk, which takes place on Sunday, January 26.
