Waterford evening events to get a fresh boost under new grant scheme

A grant scheme aimed at supporting Waterford's night-time economy has opened for applications, with funding available for creative, cultural and community events in the city centre.
Waterford Purple Flag and Waterford City and County Council have announced the return of the Night-Time Economy Grant, following the programme's success in 2025.
The scheme is designed to bring new activity to Waterford city's Purple Flag Zone during quieter evenings, with events taking place between Sunday and Thursday after 5 pm.
Grants of between €500 and €1,000 are available to artists, venues, businesses, community groups and creative collaborators.
Funding may support events including live performances, exhibitions, wellness evenings, guided tours and workshops.
Collaborative applications involving multiple partners may also be considered, subject to available funding.
Waterford City and County Council said the initiative forms part of its wider commitment to supporting cultural life across the city and county.
In 2026, elected members approved a budget of almost €1.7 million for festivals, cultural events and artistic programming.
Michael Quinn, Director of Services with Waterford City and County Council, said the pilot scheme had created opportunities for artists, community groups and businesses to develop new night-time initiatives.
"The importance of a thriving night-time economy cannot be overstated, and that is why once again the Council is proud to work with local stakeholders in continuing to encourage and enhance a dynamic, welcoming and vibrant city centre both day and night", he commented.
Jim Gordon, Chair of the Purple Flag Committee, welcomed the reopening of the scheme and said previous projects had encouraged people to experience Waterford city centre in new ways.
"Building on this momentum, the latest round of funding will continue to support innovative projects that contribute to a vibrant and welcoming night-time economy,' he said.
Applications for the scheme are now opened.
