Ferrybank Student of the Year off to Cambridge

Abbey Community College student Patrick Galvin is busy packing his bags this Autumn as the brilliant young Carrigeen man is departing his alma mater, Abbey Community College, for the glittering academic heights of Cambridge University.
A native of Carrigeen, Patrick began his educational journey at Carrigeen National School, where his love of learning and academic ability first became evident. At Cambridge, he will study Human, Social and Political Sciences.
Patrick has been recognised by Kilkenny and Carlow ETB as Abbey Community College’s Student of the Year for 2026.
Abbey Community College principal, Michelle Jefford, said the prestigious honours reflected Patrick’s academic excellence and commitment to learning. His remarkable achievements had brought immense pride to his family, his local community, his former primary school and the entire Abbey Community College community.
Ms Jefford added that the support of his proud parents, Leonard and Mairéad Galvin, had been central to his success and they were delighted to be in attendance when Patrick received this well-deserved recognition.
“Throughout his six years at Abbey Community College, Patrick distinguished himself as an exceptional student. His dedication, intellectual curiosity and willingness to embrace every opportunity made him a role model for his peers.
“Particularly noteworthy were Patrick’s achievements at national level. He achieved overall national success in the National Oireachtas Essay Competition, a highly prestigious competition established to encourage young people to engage with and understand Ireland’s democratic and political system.
"Patrick also won the Gráinne O’Neill Memorial Legal Essay Competition, organised by the Law Society of Ireland to inspire students to engage with the study of law.
“To distinguish himself amongst students from across the country in not one but two national competitions is an outstanding achievement. It speaks not only to Patrick’s academic ability but also to his independent thinking and exceptional communication skills.
“Those talents were equally evident within Abbey Community College where Patrick made a significant contribution to school life throughout his six years here.
“Patrick enthusiastically participated in a wide range of activities, including athletics, public speaking and sustainability initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to making the most of every aspect of his school experience.
“As this fine young man prepares to begin this exciting new chapter at Cambridge, everyone at Abbey Community College wishes him every success. We are immensely proud of all that he has achieved. We also acknowledge and thank the many teachers and staff who have supported, encouraged and guided Patrick throughout his six years in the Abbey. Patrick’s achievements are a wonderful reflection of his talent, hard work and character, and he will continue to be an inspiration to the entire Abbey Community College community for many years to come.”
Abbey Community College is delighted to welcome its new First Year students for the 2026 – 2027 academic year. This year's intake is made up of six First Year class groups, each bringing together students from a wide range of primary schools and backgrounds. Among them are younger siblings of current students, children of past pupils, and many families who are joining the Abbey community for the first time.
To foster a strong sense of identity and belonging, each class group has been named after a renowned Irish historical abbey, celebrating Ireland's rich cultural heritage while strengthening students' connection to their new school community.
The new students’ transition from primary to post-primary school has been supported through a comprehensive induction programme, with dedicated staff and the school's Fifth Year Cara Leaders helping students settle into school life.
From learning new routines to making friendships and discovering the many opportunities available at Abbey Community College, the First Year students have embraced this new chapter with confidence and enthusiasm.
"We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude, energy and curiosity our newest students have already demonstrated," a school spokesperson said. "Their willingness to get involved and engage with school life has made a wonderful impression on staff and fellow students alike.
