'A massive increase' in population of Waterford metropolitan area predicted
The population of Waterford metropolitan area could be as high as 90,000 in the next 15 years.
In a presentation, Micheal Murphy, a senior executive at Waterford City and County Council, revealed that the council expects Waterford’s population to increase by 45% by 2040.
The population of the Waterford Metropolitan area (which includes Slieverue, Carriganore, Kilcohan, Passage East and Grannagh Castle, as well as Waterford City Centre) is currently 66,500. According to Mr Murphy that number will jump to 87,500 in the next 15 years.
Mr Murphy commented that this is “a massive increase.”
He continued, “This is why the need for walking and cycling infrastructure is great.”
Although the original projection for Waterford’s population at 2040 is to be 87,500, according to Mr Murphy, the rate of population increase is higher than the projections.
“We could be looking at 90,000 people in the area by 2040.”
