Works Update

A joint meeting of Piltown Municipal District and Waterford Metropolitan District in City Hall was held last week. Waterford's Cllr. Jim Griffin gave an in-depth report on the outcome of the meeting which was predominately to do with the Ferrybank area. In terms of housing needs, an additional 1,300 homes will be required to meet future growth. Community facilities are also a priority, with plans for multi-use games areas, extra pitches, and a potential new school to help future-proof the area. Infrastructure planning includes a proposed third river crossing, possibly connecting Christendom to Maypark/UHW. Abbeylands is now being taken in charge, and sewer reports are nearly complete. Once finalised, attention will shift to road safety, parking, lighting, and landscaping. Cllr Griffin has urged for these improvements to be implemented swiftly before the school holidays, as safety concerns in the area need urgent attention. The Newrath Roundabout a commercial sponsorship has been secured, and landscaping will begin soon.

North Quay

The North Quay and traffic updates works are expected to begin around St. Patrick’s weekend at the Abbey School entrance and the traffic light sequencing at Fountain Street has been adjusted to ease congestion. Changes to Bus Éireann staff parking have impacted morning delays, and engineers are monitoring the situation closely. HGV turning issues were raised at the above meeting and while NTA standards have been met, Cllr. Griffin has appealed for an immediate review due to what he believes is a design flaw. Upcoming lane changes near Texaco Garage will shift traffic back to a two-lane entry/exit at Redmond Bridge. The flooding issue outside Spar has now been resolved with the installation of a new drainage and gulley system. Meanwhile, shopping centre owners are currently reviewing detailed plans, with a planning application expected to follow.
