Fundraising for Storm

Frank Conway wants support to a fund for what has to be considered a humanitarian response for the victims of Government inaction in the response to Storm Éowyn. He wants to organise a trip up to the hard hit areas of the West - parts of Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon or Cavan. There are elderly people and families with children that have no source of heat and no access to hot food. Please offer whatever support you have. Frank will document any donations he receives as well as a trip up West with supplies. If anyone would like to help out, especially someone with a van, Frank would appreciate the help. Revolut: @frankg2tr or purchase bags of coal, gas cylinders, water, etc in local supply stores in Waterford/Carrick, and Frank can pick them up en-route.

Portlaw GAA

A fantastic feature on our teams of the 70's, put together by the excellent GAA correspondent Tom Ryan, we are forever proud of the achievements of these great men in a glorious period where we were crowned Senior Hurling Champions on five different occasions and contested another two finals.

Portlaw Utd

Munster Junior Cup Result: Moneygall 1-1 Portlaw (Portlaw won 3-2 on pens). Team Sponsor: The Clodagh Bar. We travelled to Offaly to take on North Tipp League side Moneygall, in the last 16 of the Munster Cup. We played into a howling wind in the first and controlled the game as much as we could with Stefan making a huge save to keep us level, but later fell behind when we failed to defend a second ball into the box. With the wind at our backs we dominated the second half and created chance after chance hitting the post four times without finding the net. As the game moved into the 90th min and thinking it wasn’t going to be our day, Darryl crossed a ball from the left that found 16 year old Samuel Deevy and he coolly slotted it home with the outside of his foot. Extra time passed with no further goals and we moved to penalties. Darryl, Rocky and John hit three great penalties, and two saves from Stefan ensured we advanced to the quarter final of the Munster Cup. This is huge achievement for our club, players and management team and great day we’ll remember for many years.

Our U12’s were out recently for their eight league match of the season, against Carrick Utd at home in The Paddocks. Portlaw got off to a flying start with Colm Nugent slotting home calmly from a Darragh O’Connor through ball after 17 seconds. A mix up in the Portlaw defence then gave Carrick an equaliser against the run of play on six minutes. Portlaw continued to press forward with Darragh O’Connor netting twice from assists by Colm Nugent. Halftime score was 3-1 to the home side. Portlaw went 4-1 up three minutes after the break with Darragh O’Connor heading home a brilliant glancing header from a Sean Maher corner. Sean Maher provided another assist to Evan Kiely to score the fifth. Darragh O’Connor completed the scoring on 53 mins with his fourth and Portlaw’s sixth, with an Olympico goal direct from a corner. Massive shifts put in from the whole team with Brian Grant commanding his goal, and Connor O’Donoghue, Luke Devereux, Finn Kirwan and Alex Roche all contributing to defensive duties. Taylor Flannery, Tommy Dunphy and Evan Kiely, worked hard on the wings with Darragh O’Connor, Sean Maher and Colm Nugent linking up well through the middle areas. Lilly Kinsella at left back and later centre back was as dependable as ever. Ryan Power came on with 20 mins to go to make his debut for the team. Well done to the team and the win keeps them up near the top section of the table. Congratulations to our Premier players, Jack Kennedy, Sam Croke and Samuel Deevy on qualifying for the Munster Schools quarter final. Goals on the day from Deevy and Croke helping with the win. We would again like to thank everyone who signed up for the club Supporters Development Syndicate to date. The results of our latest draw were comprised of: 1st prize - €100 - Nicky Guiry; 2nd prize - €50 - Pat Walsh (Queen St); 3rd prize - €25 - Davy Power.
