AmyLee Lennon from Portlaw came second in the world kick-boxing championships in Germany
The camogie club extends warm congratulations to AmyLee Lennon on winning a silver medal at the World kickboxing championships. AmyLee plays camogie with our club, we are so proud of you and well done on a fantastic achievement.
It's nearly Panto time again for Portlaw Musical Society and our girls chorus will return on November 5, at 7.30pm in the community centre. If you are interested please come along and make sure to tell your friends who may also be interested in taking part.
The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is currently visiting Waterford and will remain here until Wednesday, October 23. The IBTS is currently experiencing very low stocks of all blood groups and is urgently seeking to increase the supply by an additional 500 units weekly for the next four weeks in order to meet hospital demand. We urge everyone to support the IBTS where possible as it’s such a vital service.
Thirty-two girls from our U13s down to U10s took part in the Tommy Walsh Memorial Cup on Friday evening. Lovely skills and teamwork on display from all four teams. The orange team came out victorious but it was very close, coming down to goal difference. The cup was presented to Captain Lilly Forde by Tommy Walsh's great granddaughter, Breffni Foley. Girls' soccer continues to grow from strength to strength in Portlaw. We have teams U10, U12, U14 and U16. New players are always welcome at 6pm on Friday evenings.
Portlaw U15s had a great result against Tramore C, emerging victorious on a 4-1 scoreline, under the lights in what was a hard fought game.
Two goals from Harry Carroll along with Luke Bolger and Rocco Conte made sure we were two from two in our league campaign. The U16s lost out to Villa on a 3-1 scoreline recently in the league. However, it was a great effort from the lads but unfortunately they did not get the reward for these efforts and unfortunately sometimes that is sport. After having some good chances we went in at the break one down, after conceding a penalty. We started the second half strongly and got back on level terms through a really well taken goal from Freddie. We pushed on but could not get ahead. Villa came back into the game and scored two from outside the box with great strikes. We started playing with a bit more urgency again and got right back in the game after Kevin converted a penalty, after being awarded it. Despite our best efforts Villa hung on for the win. Thanks to Villa and referee Stuart Kennedy for a good game. Hard luck lads.
In the FAI Cup, Portlaw overcame Tycor on a 2-1 scoreline. Sponsored by the O'Brien family, it was a really good result for the team and a great performance in what was an real old style cup game against the premier league opponents. We started well and made a couple of great chances before Peter Woods gave us a deserved half time lead with a good strike from the edge of the box. In the second half Tycor really came into the game and went close on a number of occasions with Stefan and our defence keeping us ahead. We went 2-0 up when 15-year-old Sam Croke got onto a ball at the edge of the box and beat two defenders before somehow brilliantly finishing under the advancing keeper. Tycor hit straight back with a great strike from a free-kick and really pushed on for the equaliser that left space at both ends. Our best effort was a Peter Woods strike which hit the post late on.
Tycor had a few late chances but found Stefan in brilliant form with a couple of unbelievable saves and a goal line clearance from Darryl guaranteed a hard fought win.
Our U12 were out recently for their sixth league match of the season, away to Villa. The opposition got off to a good star, scoring twice in the first 15 minutes. Portlaw then came into the game creating some good scoring chances but didn’t take any of them until Darragh O’Connor picked up a pass from Charlie Carroll to shoot and score from a tight angle. The second half was pretty much the same except with Villa scoring one early in the half and then a further two late goals. If it had not been the heroics of Brian Grant making numerous saves the score line could have been much worse. Luke Devereux is also worth a mention for his game; solid even after taking a knock in the first half. This game brought an end to the team's excellent start to the season but shows that there is plenty of room for improvement.
Our U7s, 8s, 9s and 10s had a great end of year outing to Activate recently where the kids enjoyed the soft play area, laser tag and rock climbing to celebrate a great year. Well done everyone. Hard luck to our minor footballers who were narrowly beaten by Clashmore/Kinsalebeg in the Shield Final on a scoreline of Portlaw/Ballyduff (1-7) Clashmore/Kinsalebeg (1-11).
