On Wednesday, October 2, Seamus McElhinney, Priest's Road, Tramore, and formerly of Ballygunner, passed away peacefully at University Hospital Waterford surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his beloved parents Dan and Bridget. Seamus will be sadly missed by his loving wife Catherine, his loving children Ger, James and Catriona, his adoring grandchildren, his sister Maura, his auntie Martha, and his daughter-in-law Edwina. He will be forever missed by all his nieces and nephews all his relatives, extended family, wonderful neighbours, and many friends. A well-known musician in the South East, Seamus reposed at Falconer's Funeral Home, on Friday, October 4, with Requiem Mass on Saturday morning at The Church of the Holy Cross, Tramore, after which he was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
The Lafcadio Hearn Gardens were excited to recently announce the commencement of the construction of our new Kokoro Cultural Centre which will take pride of place in Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens, Tramore. Kokoro Cultural Centre is on course for completion in August, 2025. The name Kokoro in Japanese means, ‘spirit or soul.’ It is the title of one of Hearn’s books about Japan, in which he strived to convey a sense of the inner life of his adopted country. They look forward to developing this centre of culture which will further enhance the tourism offering of Waterford City, County, and the wider South East region. The upper floor level of the Kokoro Centre will be a covered space, providing introductory information and facilitating talks to visiting tour groups. It will also provide a relaxing café space to sit and absorb the wonderful views of the gardens and the glorious Tramore Bay below. The lower level will have seating for one hundred people and will become a venue for cultural events, concerts, music performances, poetry readings and workshops. It will also provide a beautiful indoor space for many of the annual garden events as well as functioning as a welcome facility for community, national and international tour groups.
The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens is a registered charity and a ‘not for profit’ entity. The outlay on the construction of the building to date is being supported by a grant from the Waterford Leader Partnership Programme, by philanthropic sources, by money raised directly by the gardens from gate receipts and borrowings. Fundraising is ongoing for this development, and we will post details on support options soon.
Thank you all who came and supported Tramore Tidy Towns recently at SuperValu. The kindness and the fantastic feedback today was heart lifting. The chairperson of Tidy Towns Tramore and on behalf of our committee and volunteers, would like to say a massive thank you to the people of Tramore. They came out in droves to support us while bag packing in Supervalu over the two days. A big thank you to Helen C, Mary K, Maria S, Tracey Mc, Anne C and John O'G, who volunteered with us on these days. We will keep working hard to keep our town clean and beautiful with the help from Ray Hogan, our local Council workers, TUS, Tramore AFC, Supervalu and the people of Tramore from Tidy Towns.
Tramore Parkrun recently celebrated its 20th year. They had a fantastic crew of volunteers, TY students from Ardscoil na Mara, exchange students from Yates and Tom, from Waterpark, as well as a few other regulars. Without these volunteers the park run would not have been able to survive and it is expected that after every ten parkruns you volunteer for one run, not too much to ask.

It is with regret we record the sudden passing of John Cooney, at his home in Carrigaline, on Sunday, October 6, with his family by his side. He managed a lot of Supervalu stores in Wexford and Waterford, including the Hyper, before he moved to Cork about 27 years ago.
