The Minaun Community Theatre Group will present a 90-minute play on the extraordinary life of Mary Somerville Parker Strangman on Thursday, September 5, in Faithlegg School. Born in Carriganore, Waterford, Mary was one of the first female doctors in Ireland and the UK and became Waterford’s first female Councillor in 1912. She pioneered work in alcoholism and addiction, championed social reform, women’s rights, and public health, particularly combating tuberculosis. Even after retiring from public office in 1920, she continued to serve as a physician. The event play will be staged from 8pm to 9.30pm and admission will be €10.

Hurling News

Passage senior hurlers put up a very good show against Ballygunner recently in the County Semi Final. In a game where both defences were on top they gave it their best shot, especially in the first half. Both teams relied on free takers and penetration by both sides was very difficult against good defending. At halftime Ballygunner led by four points, a fair reflection of the play. Eddie Lynch, our goalkeeper saved two clear goal cut chances from Ballygunner, one in each half, and Passage had one in the second half. Passage, playing with the wind behind them in the second half made a slow start and Ballygunner in the first 10 minutes or so did the damage. For next year the future seems bright when more of our younger players get stronger and more experienced. Well done to the entire panel, the manager, coach and selectors and indeed all involved with the panel this year, a semi-final place is definitely progress. A little observation given with the very best intention. Like most clubs in Waterford presently, there is a problem with short puck outs. It even comes in our county teams and indeed other county teams also, and many of our supporters join with me in this observation. If the ball given to the receiver is not cleanly taken into the hand by him and drops with his back to the play there is a problem which can be minor - a point - or major - a goal, something that can be easily rectified. For our juveniles there are two big games coming up, this Tuesday at 6.45 pm in Stradbally the U13 team play St Patrick's in the county semi-final and on Tuesday, September 10, in Fenor, our U15 team play Brickey Rangers in another county semi-final. Best of luck to both teams. Well done to Callum Palmer, who represented Waterford in the Tony Forristal Tournament recently and also to Fionn Kelly, Luke Fitzgerald, Paul Casey and Rory Cullinane who represented Waterford in the Sonny Walsh tournament, beating Dublin in the final. Kilkenny went on to be the outright winners. Well done also to Dillon Mason and Rowan Jacob who represented Waterford in the John Doyle U15 Cup recently. Waterford drew with Wexford, finishing joint third. Special notice to all, the drainage of our main pitch in Crooke will mean that it will be out of bounds to all for six weeks from Monday, September 9. The Juvenile pitch will be still available.

Cross Country

The Annual Ferrybank AC promoted, Primary Schools Cross Country is at the RSC on Tuesday, September 17, at 11am. Short races for 1st to 6th classes and children from Passage East and Faithlegg Schools are expected to participate.
