Major headliner announced for Gaelscoil Gigs event in Tramore

Gaelscoil Gigs headliner Kíla

'Gaelscoil Gigs' returns to Waterford for its third year this February and have this week announced their headline act, Kíla.

The popular band will play a small, intimate gig, organised by and held at Gaelscoil Philib Barún, Tramore, on Thursday February 6.

'Gaelscoil Gigs' has grown into a cultural event not to be missed, endeavouring to attract acts each year that bring an eclectic mix of Irish Trad fusion with alternative sounds and rhythms, which ordinarily might not be available to audiences outside of Galway, Dublin or Cork.

To date the events have welcomed Liam Ó Maonlaí, Rónán Ó Snodaigh and Myles O'Reilly, and Cór Fear na nDéise ón An Rinn, ensuring that Waterford audiences have access to top class trad acts from across the country.

Gaelscoil Gigs started as a way for the school's parents association to raise funds for the school, supporting the creative projects of the pupils and securing additional facilities like ‘The Cubbie’ - an immersive sensory space regularly used by the junior classes and available to all pupils to regulate sensory stress.

Gaelscoil Gigs continues to grow with hopes to expand and become an inclusive community based initiative open to all those who have a grá for languages and arts in Tramore.

The sell out gigs receive rave reviews each year and audiences are in for a treat as they enter the school's ‘An Halla’, an intimate venue where they are immersed in live music for the evening.

A spokesperson said to the Waterford News & Star:"We expect even greater things from Kíla this year. We are sure the ambience of the school will invoke their mischievous energy and remind them of their own school days in the 80's when they formed this very same 8-piece band at their own school."

"Kíla bring a fresh blend of freewheeling instruments, furious jigs and primal rhythms that transcend the traditional boundaries of Irish Music," said the spokesperson. "Their sounds eclipse any language or cultural boundaries and differences, making this a gig not to be missed. Unleash your inner celt with Gaelscoil gigs this new year."

Support act this year is Muireann Ní Shé, a wildly talented uilleann piper, multi-instrumentalist and singer from County Cork. Limited tickets for the gig are available at eventbrite.ie
