Friends of The River Suir to celebrate Summer Solstice with free events

Local group Friends of The River Suir have announced an evening of music, heritage and community in celebration of the Summer Solstice.
Since prehistory, the summer solstice has been seen as a significant time of year, being marked by rituals and gatherings.
The summer solstice is the day with the longest period of daylight and shortest night of the year.
It's the day when the sun is at its highest position in the sky
The local group will welcome the day with a family friendly event of fun held at William Vincent Wallace Plaza.
It will take place on Friday, June 20, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
The event will showcase local musical talent from age 10 to 100.
There will be performances from Joe Tobin, Paul Dillon, Cilian Jacob, Squire and more.
Aside from the live performances, free face-painting will also be available, alongside an interactive scavenger hunt which will guide participants along the Waterford quays.
Free hands-on workshops will also be available this year including rope splicing with local fishermen, knot-tying demos for sailing and fishing, craft displays highlighting maritime traditions, river conservation and local wildlife exhibits.
During the event, locals will also have the chance to meet local river heroes including volunteers from Waterford City River Rescue, Re-A-Suir, Friends of St. John’s River and Coastwatch Ireland.
Friends of The River Suir is a dedicated local organisation committed to the preservation and celebration of the River Suir, which is itself a vital natural and cultural resource in the community.
They aim to promote environmental stewardship, cultural activities, and community engagement through various events and initiatives, fostering a deeper connection between residents and their natural surroundings.
