Influential midfielder Rowan McDonald will remain at Waterford FC for the SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division campaign after the former Manchester City academy player penned a deal for the club ahead of the new season.
After an impressive first full-season with the Blues following his brilliant opening six months, McDonald played a key role in Keith Long’s ide in 2024 where he made 32 appearances across all competitions.
Having first made the move across the Irish Sea back in August 2023, McDonald played a starring role in helping the Blues win promotion back to the top flight of Irish football and he continued to make great strides during the last 12 months.
An engine in the heart of the midfield, the former City Youth captain has opted to stay at the RSC for another year where he’ll be hoping, along with his teammates, to continue to build on the success on a first year back in the top flight.
Commenting on his decision to return to the Blues for the upcoming campaign, McDonald said: “I’m delighted to sign new deal. I’ve really enjoyed my time at Waterford, and I believe we can push on next year. The gaffer has always shown faith in me, especially after my injury and got me back playing again.
“The fans were class last year and I’m really looking forward to getting back in front of them and excited for the year ahead.” Waterford FC Head Coach Keith Long added: “Great to have him back at the club for season 2025 – a key player and influence around the club since his arrival mid-season 2023. I’m delighted to continue our working relationship and I believe Rowan will continue to get better in a Blues’ shirt.” MUNSTER SENIOR CUP After winning the Munster Senior Cup last season, Waterford FC were the first team out of the hat in the draw for the 2025 competition where they’ll face Cork side Bandon AFC at the RSC on the weekend of January 19.
