FAI confirm U-turn on the proposed Aligned Calendar Football

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has confirmed a revised approach to competition calendars as part of the next phase of its strategic development plans. Following a comprehensive review and consultation process, the proposed Aligned Football Calendar has been removed as a deliverable from both the Football Pathways Plan and the Association's current 2026-2029 Strategic Plan.
The decision comes after the FAI assessed its priorities and determined that resources would be better directed towards initiatives expected to deliver the greatest benefits for Irish football over the next three years. While the Aligned Football Calendar was considered an important topic during consultations, the Association believes its current focus should remain on strengthening football pathways, developing the game at all levels and delivering on other key objectives contained within the strategic plan.
Despite this change in direction, the FAI has stressed that it remains committed to improving player pathways and supporting the long-term growth of football across the country. The Association noted that discussions regarding an Aligned Football Calendar have not been abandoned and could be revisited during the next strategic planning cycle, should circumstances and stakeholder feedback support further consideration.
In the meantime, leagues around Ireland will continue to retain the flexibility to organise their competitions in a manner that best suits local needs and individual circumstances. However, a number of national cup competitions will continue to be played under a winter-season format. These include the FAI Men's Under-17 Cup, the FAI Youth Cup, the FAI Intermediate Cup and the FAI Junior Cup.
The changes were formally approved by the FAI Board following an ongoing review of competition structures and continued engagement with stakeholders from across Irish football. The Association said the updated approach reflects feedback received throughout the process and confirmed that the changes will be incorporated into the relevant competition regulations moving forward.
