West Waterford golfer Seamus Power finished in 26th place at the Amgen Irish Open held at Royal County Down golf club in the past week with fellow county man Gary Hurley failed to make the weekend cut at the event that was won by Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard.
After Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy looked primed to win the event close to his native home at Holywood just an hour away from the course, as he led the field by two shots with four holes to play, a bogey on the 17th put him behind the winner, who birdied the last four holes for a one-stroke win.
McIlroy looked in command as he led by four shots early in the final round, and he did have a chance at the last to earn a playoff, but his eagle putt just came up short meaning a fifth DP win for Hojgaard with a final round of 65.
For Seamus Power, he opened the tournament with a 74 before shooting a 69 on Friday for his lowest round of the week. Two 71’s followed over the weekend as he finished on a final total of 285 which was +1 for the four days ten shots off the winner and a 26th placed finish picking up €52,242.24 in prize money.
Gary Hurley shot an opening round 74 before carding a 75 on the Friday, which wasn’t good enough to make the cut for the tournament as he eventually finished in 121 spot. For Power he was happy to make it to the weekend and he’ll be hoping to build on this performance in future events.
