Few players have left as lasting a mark on ladies football as Waterford's Catriona Casey, and her remarkable contribution to the game has now been recognised with the prestigious GPA Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Waterford and Ballymacarbry great was honoured at the annual Football Legends Lunch in Croke Park on Friday, an event that celebrates individuals whose impact on Gaelic Games has transcended generations. Casey shared the honour with Dublin football icon Tony Hanahoe, with both recognised for their outstanding achievements and enduring influence on the sport.

A central figure in one of the most successful eras in ladies football, Casey played a pivotal role in the dominance of both Waterford and Ballymacarbry throughout the late 1980s and 1990s. Renowned for her skill, leadership and consistency, she established herself as one of the finest players ever to grace the game.

Her glittering career featured five All-Ireland senior titles with Waterford, an incredible ten All-Ireland club championships with Ballymacarbry, and four All-Star awards, alongside a host of provincial and national honours. Those achievements helped cement the reputation of Ballymacarbry as one of the most successful clubs in ladies football history, while her performances in the Déise colours inspired countless young players across the country.

The award is a fitting tribute not only to Casey’s success on the field but also to the role she played in advancing ladies football during a period when the game received far less recognition and support than it enjoys today. Through her dedication, excellence and example, she helped pave the way for future generations of players.

By receiving the GPA Lifetime Achievement Award, Casey joins an illustrious list of Gaelic Games legends whose contributions have left an indelible legacy on Irish sport.
