Well known Waterford building getting demolished

The building was constructed in the 1930s.

At a recent meeting of the Metropolitan District Council, Councillor Dónal Barry said he was "really disappointed with the decision to demolish the old Scanlon's Car Show rooms". He said it is a "unique building in the cultural quarter. We'll never see the likes of it again and it's going to be flattened to the ground".

The current owner of Scanlon's garage, Robin Scanlon, spoke to the Waterford News & Star about the history of the building.

"My grandfather's garage started there in 1927. He was a motorcycle mechanic," he said.

Mr Scanlon reckons that the current building that stands today was built in the early 1930s, after a fire broke out in 1929, burning the garage and the apartment above it to the ground.

In 1972, Scanlon's Garage moved to Railway Square and an office supply store moved in.

In 2023, Waterford City and County Council took over the building and it has lain idle since then.

According to Waterford City and County Council; "Works Tender is being finalised by Consultant Team for issue in April, with demolition works expected to commence in Q3 2026, subject to URDF departmental approval of final tender stage."
