Waterford's Metropolitan mayor gets engaged

The couple have been together for five years.

Last week, Metropolitan Mayor Adam Wyse got engaged to his partner, Megan Taheny.

The young mayor sat down with the Waterford News & Star to tell us all about the nerve-racking question.

The couple have been together since 2020. They talked for months online during the COVID-19 pandemic, waiting until they could go on their first official date.

Their first date was simple.

“We couldn’t go into any businesses. I think we literally went for a walk within the two kilometres.”

Adam and Megan love to travel together. Adam’s brother, Jason, recently turned 30, so a group of them road-tripped along the west coast of the United States. They went to San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

“There were eight of us all in the car, driving down motorways for eight or nine hours, stopping in at different hotels. It was very cool.”

The couple have a cockapoo called Benji.

“He takes up most of the time now. We live through him. We’re one of those dog couples.”

Adam told the Waterford News & Star that he had been planning the proposal “for a long time”. Adam asked Megan’s father John, “What he would think of me marrying his daughter and he was delighted.”

“I’m a terrible person to keep a secret because I told a lot of people before I asked Megan."

But thankfully, no one let the cat out of the bag.

“She was hugely surprised.”

Adam had planned to propose on another night. He was going to propose on the big wheel at Winterval. He had organised for his mother, Megan’s parents and close friends to be there afterwards to celebrate with the couple.

However, those plans went awry when Megan fell ill that evening.

Next to Megan’s parents' house there is field where the couple bring their dog out for a run around.

“We went out to have breakfast in her mother’s house that morning. I was sitting at the kitchen table with the ring in my pocket thinking ‘do I do it now?’ He proposed in the field where the couple are hoping to build a house.

“She was shocked, she burst into tears. Tears of joy, hopefully.”

The Waterford News & Star wish the happy couple all the best.
