Waterford young people feel more connected through Gaisce

More young people in Waterford feel connected to their communities and are building confidence through participation in Gaisce, according to new research published by the President's Award organisation.
The survey of more than 1,000 Gaisce Awardees found that 90% felt more connected to their communities after completing the programme, while 89% said it gave them a stronger sense of purpose.
The findings come as Gaisce celebrates a record year nationally, with 29,299 young people registering for the award and 17,641 completing it in 2025, the highest figures in the programme's 40-year history.
In Waterford, 549 young people took part in Gaisce during the year.
The report also highlights the programme's impact on young people's personal development.
Eight in 10 participants said completing Gaisce boosted their confidence, while 90% said they developed lifelong skills through the experience.
Half of those surveyed believe the skills they gained will benefit their future education and careers.
Volunteering remains a key part of the Gaisce journey, with participants across Ireland contributing more than 423,000 hours to communities nationwide during the year.
Physical activity also featured strongly in the survey findings, with 90% saying Gaisce encouraged them to become more active and 87% reporting that it motivated them to stay involved in sport and exercise.
Gaisce Youth Ambassador Aoife McElroy said the award helped her step outside her comfort zone, gain confidence and become more involved in her community.
Meanwhile, Gaisce CEO Avril Ryan said the programme continues to provide young people with opportunities to build confidence, develop essential life skills and strengthen their sense of belonging.
The award's reach continues to expand, with Gaisce now available in 81% of secondary schools nationwide.
Participation in DEIS schools increased by 21% last year, while registrations among young people involved in youth diversion programmes rose by 34%.
The survey also found strong enthusiasm among participants to continue their Gaisce journey, with 91% expressing an interest in progressing to the next level of the award.
