Waterford TD hits out at Government following the push back of homeless family action plan

Waterford TD David Cullinane has said families facing homelessness cannot put their lives on hold as the government pushes out the new action plan.
The Government were reportedly due to put the major action plan to support children and families to last week, according to the Irish Examiner.
However, reports now say the plan will not go ahead until September.
Deputy Cullinane says that families deserve more than “sympathy and promises.” “Parents who have received eviction notices, families trapped in hotel rooms and children growing up in emergency accommodation need urgent action now. They do not need another Government plan delayed by months.
“Behind every homelessness statistic is a family living with enormous stress and uncertainty. Children are being forced to live without the security, stability and privacy that every child deserves,” said Deputy Cullinane.
According to the last Monthly Homelessness Report, published in May, 76 families in the South East were in Local Authority emergency accommodation.
That number is on the rise and included 112 children in May and 120 in April.
“This Government has been in office for years, and family homelessness has continued to worsen. It has repeatedly failed to deliver enough social and affordable homes, protect renters or prevent families from entering homelessness in the first place.
“The Government cannot continue to blame local authorities, the budget or everyone else for an emergency that has developed under its watch,” said Deputy Cullinane.
