A crowdfunding campaign is to be launched to raise money to help build an eco-education hub on a barge.

The 55ft barge will feature flood-resilient plants in a rooftop garden and serve as a platform for scientific analysis and artistic storytelling, and will travel the waterways of Ireland.

Designed as an eco-educational hub, Floating Voices will monitor water quality and educate on the importance of clean water and water conservation, while providing environmental and sustainability education to local communities along Ireland’s waterways, from Waterford to Derry.

Project founder and Waterford native Edel Tobin, hopes the project will transform how we care for our environment.

“The time for action is here and now. I want people to get involved, come aboard, and help us create a greener future. This is a chance for everyone to play their part in tackling climate change and leave a legacy for future generations,” said Ms Tobin.

The campaign is to be launched on February 10, 2025.

Floating Voices will engage communities across Ireland in vital conversations about conservation and inspire action in tackling climate challenges.

Artists and scientists are to collaborate with communities through workshops and artistic expression, sharing stories and ideas to inspire action in protecting our environment and waterways.

The barge is fully designed and ready to be built, with construction costs estimated at €200,000.

Ms Tobin has a track record of spearheading impactful, community-led initiatives.

Her previous projects, such as Waterford Walls and New Street Gardens, have put Waterford on the map as a centre of excellence in creativity, community development, and sustainability.

Ms Tobin has already secured a prime mooring on Waterford’s Quays, underscoring her commitment to ensuring this unique project becomes a reality in her hometown.

She has also engaged locally based Waterford naval architect Prolines to design the barge as an eco-fitted, zero-carbon-emissions vessel, funding this vital step herself through her company, Street Art Ink.
