Waterford man threatened to stab Garda in neck

He threatened to stab a Garda in the neck.

A Waterford man has been sentenced to three years in prison for threatening to kill a Garda. Shane Lindsay (46), of Kennedy Park, Tramore, appeared before Judge O'Kelly at Waterford Circuit Court.

Garda Sean Dunne stated how on May 8, 2023, he attended to a domestic incident at an address in Clonard Park, Waterford City.

Garda Dunne and a colleague found Lindsay and his former partner intoxicated and having a verbal altercation over alcohol. Children of the couple were present at the scene, visibly upset.

Lindsay proceeded to the kitchen and took out a knife and shouted "I'll stab him in the throat" towards a Garda.

Garda Dunne told the Court that Lindsay held the knives for approximately 5 minutes. After his arrest, he said: "I'm really sorry for doing it, I was just really upset."

The court heard that Lindsay had 42 previous convictions, beginning in 1994. Defending counsel Gareth Hayden BL explained that his client has had tragedy in his life and had significant problems with alcohol.

"He accepts his behaviour was unacceptable."

Judge O'Kelly sentenced Lindsay to four years for the threat to kill, with the final year suspended and one year and nine months for the production of an article.
