The Gardaí in Waterford have issued a notice warning the public to be wary of online romance scams.
A spokesperson said reported romance frauds have increased significantly and last year 2025, online media users in Ireland were conned out of approximately €2.8 million through online romance fraud.
She said 88 men and women were targeted, however, she also said the number was likely higher as victims as sometimes reluctant to report the incidents.
"Over the past 5 years over €9 million has been stolen and while affecting all, a significant number of reported victims are women," said the spokesperson.
"Victims of the scam believe they have met their perfect match online, but the other person is in fact a scammer using a fake profile to build the relationship," she added
"They slowly gain the victim’s trust with a view to eventually asking them for money."
Romance fraudsters often attempt to move the relationship along at a quick pace, seek lots of personal information, and send multiple messages daily and then nothing for a period. The Garda spokesperson said such fraudsters try to get their victims to send them money using the following excuses: to cover the cost of travelling to see the victim; for emergency medical expenses for the scammer or a family member — typically a child; a business opportunity which would allow them to live together comfortably.
"Remember that these fraudsters are professional and they prey on your emotions and empathy, not weakness, and anyone can be a victim of this type of fraud," said the spokesperson.
With regard to what people can do to protect themselves, the Gardaí advise people to do the following: 1. Use trusted dating websites; 2. Do not share personal details, particularly personal or intimate photos; 3. Do not send or receive money; 4. Think twice before using your webcam; 5. Trust your instincts and have a conversation with someone that you trust in real life.
The Gardaí are also encouraging victims, or those who believe they are victims, of such romance scams along with those who think their identity or personal information has been compromised, to contact any Garda Station and report the crime.
"Please be assured that An Garda Síochána will treat all reports in confidence," said the spokesperson.
