Waterford councillors say planning waivers should be extended

“We have had no indication it will be extended” - Senior Executive Planner at Waterford City and County Council in relation to planning waivers.

Comeragh councillors will ask the next government to extend the Local Authority Section 48 Development Contribution waiver.

The waiver, which has reduced the costs for those building homes across the country, expires on December 31, 2024. At last week’s sitting of Comeragh District Council, Councillor Seánie Power praised the waiver, saying it has helped young people to build.

“It has been really good in fairness and we will look for the next government to keep it,” said Cllr  Power.

Cllr Liam Brazil asked if there is still time for people to avail of the waiver.

Senior Executive Planner Aisling O’Sullivan said anyone currently applying for planning permission will not be able to avail of the waiver.

Ms O’Sullivan explained that to benefit, those building their homes must have commenced construction by December 31, 2024.

But, in order to do that, they must put in a commencement notice at least two weeks before to the local authority.

That means that those hoping to avail of the waiver must issue their commencement notice by December 17, 2024.

This will not be possible for those currently applying for planning permission. The senior planner said they do not expect it to be extended.

“We have had no indication it will be extended,” said Ms O’Sullivan.
