Waterford councillor on two years in the chamber: 'Not every issue makes the headlines'
Councillor Mulcahy said its the small things that make the biggest difference to people.
A West Waterford councillor has said that it's the small things that make a difference in people’s lives.
As this month marks two years since the first time councillor was elected in the Dungarvan- Lismore district, Donnchadh Mulcahy has been reflecting on his time in the chamber.
Cllr Mulcahy described the last two years as “busy and rewarding” and his focus has been on ensuring the voices of communities in West Waterford are heard.
"Not every issue makes the headlines, but often it is the small things that make a real difference to people. Whether it's helping someone with housing, getting a road repaired, improving lighting or simply making sure concerns are followed up, that's what public representation is about.
"It has been a privilege to serve the people of West Waterford over the past two years. From day one, my priority has been to be accessible, to listen to people's concerns and to work hard on their behalf," said Cllr Mulcahy.
For those who do not follow politics, councillors play an important role in helping ordinary people navigate local resources.
Many people contact councillors about housing and roads, which are very important, but they can also help with understanding your rights, information on grants and funding and who to talk to becasue councils are big organisations.
Your councillors do not decide who gets a house or a grant, but no issue is too small and that is why we elect councillors.
And they work with individuals, groups, businesses and any local who just needs some advice.
Cllr Mulcahy listed a wide range of local issues that have kept him busy, including road safety improvements, housing, public lighting, community development projects, healthcare concerns, anti-dumping measures, public transport and supporting local organisations.
He has also worked closely with community groups, sporting organisations, schools and residents' associations throughout the district while continuing his role as Chairperson of West Waterford Mental Health Awareness.
He said one of the most important aspects of the role has been helping people navigate issues that affect their daily lives.
Looking ahead, Mulcahy said there is still much work to be done across West Waterford and he remains committed to delivering for the communities he represents.
"I am proud of what has been achieved over the last two years, but there is no room for complacency.
“There are still challenges facing our communities and I will continue standing up for West Waterford and working to ensure our area gets the investment and attention it deserves."
Cllr Mulcahy thanked everyone who has supported him since his election and said he looks forward to continuing to work on behalf of communities across West Waterford in the years ahead.
