A long vacant building at The Glen in Waterford City was recently demolished, with apartments planned at the site.

Three properties at 38/39 The Glen were demolished following the issue of a Section 15 derelict site notice last August.

Following the demolition, plans have now been submitted by hoteliers James Treacy & Tommy Treacy, to construct 13 apartments at the site, consisting of five two-bedroom, six one-bedroom, and two studio apartments.

Speaking on the development, Cllr Frank Quinlan (FG) said that it is very positive for the city: “That site has been vacant and derelict for around 15 to 20 years. Its falling down, the roof was caving in, it looked unsightly and it was a real eyesore for the people in the community.

“A site notice was placed last year. The owners demolished the whole building within a month of the notice being erected. This is a good start and they worked closely with the Council. The demolition of the site shows the intention by the owners and hopefully we can see apartments there sooner rather than later."

Cllr Quinlan added that the Glen as a whole has the potential to be radically developed in the coming years.

“The Glen is an ideal location for this particular development, because it’s so close to schools and the city centre," he said.

“Number 29, The Glen is also being developed at the moment, that will possibly be ready before the end of the year," he added.

"The Showboat is also on the derelict site register as are a few other houses in the area, so there’s plenty of potential for new buildings to be developed in the area in the coming years and this is a very good start."

Cllr Quinlan said that when it comes to bringing such derelict buildings back into use, Waterford is far ahead of other local authorities: “Every local authority in the country is following Waterford’s example. With all the developments taking place, Waterford is way ahead in terms of proactiveness in this area. We’re leading the way."
