Updates provided on plans for 'tourist attraction of scale' at North Quays
Updates were provided this week on plans for a ‘visitor attraction of scale’ in Waterford.
Last March, Failte Ireland unveiled their intentions to develop an attraction of scale at the north side of the river in Waterford City.
The tourism body indicated that the attraction would potentially become a transformative project for tourism not just in Waterford, but the entire south east region.
To commence the project, Waterford Council entered a process with Fáilte Ireland through which a strategic assessment report would be carried out to ascertain where would be the best location for the attraction.
It is understood that a site had already been identified prior to the commencement of the assessment report, however the formal assessment still needed to take place before any decisions were made.
Following the completion of the report, a call will be made for proposals to be submitted to decide what the attraction of scale should be.
Cllr Adam Wyse, asked for updates on the development at last week's Plenary Council meeting, with Council Executives confirming that the assessment report is being finalised.
“I have a few ideas I’d like to see developed and I think the Council should have a meeting on it” he said.
In response to the query, Waterford Council Acting Director of Services Claire Hartley, said:
“The strategic assessment report is with the two funding agencies, Failte Ireland and Waterford City and County Council, in terms of finalising.
“We’re not at a stage where we can bring it to the attention of the elected members, but when we can, we will.”
