St John's River Walk trail suffers 'senseless act of vandalism'

Deliberate damage was done to the railings over the Christmas period.

The railings on St John’s River Walk trails were badly damaged over the Christmas period, in what one local councillor calls a 'senseless act of vandalism'.

Councillor Donal Barry (Independent) is calling on Waterford City and County Council to carry out emergency repairs to the railings before installing a permanent rail.

Cllr Barry stated: "Unfortunately, during the Christmas holiday deliberate damage was caused to the wooden fencing that separated the walkway from the river. Most of the wooden posts were removed and dumped into the river in a senseless act of wanting vandalism which puts the lives of those who use the walkway at risk."

The damage to trails is not an isolated incident, according to Cllr Barry.

He continued: "There was similar damage done to the wooden post about twelve months ago which was replaced by the Council. I have requested that a stronger and more secure railing in erected at this section of the river walk at the Cherrymount Bridge.

"The Council is going to examine the situation to find the best solution."
