Director of Services for Kilkenny County Council Ian Gardner gave an update on the current progress of the next section of South East Greenway at a recent meeting in Ferrybank.

He said: "The Greenway team continue to engage with Waterford City and County Council (WCCC) in relation to a completion date. The most recent advice is the end of March 2026."

On related schemes, he noted that the detailed design for the 9km stretch between Curraghmore and Ballyverneen was being progressed by consultants.

Mr Gardner went on: "For the South North access road in Ferrybank, the design team have completed the detailed design for the South-North link road.

"On the Greenway link to Glenmore, the design team have commenced work on the procurement of a service. As the detailed design progresses, discussions with the prospective landowners will continue regarding the acquisition of land."

Mr Gardner said that different funding streams were being identified to progress works in Slieverue. A second public consultation is expected to be held in late February relating to the Woodstock to Southeast Greenway link.

Mr Gardner commented: "Landowner engagement is continuing. Following the landowner consultation and landowner engagement, a preferred route corridor option will be proposed."

Councillor Ger Frisby (Fianna Fáil) asked about the purported date of completion: "You answered the 'end of March', at the moment. I had a group on last year that were going to do something on it in June and we were hoping that that would go ahead, so accurate is that? What is holding it up? Why isn't the sign over happening?"

Mr Gardner replied: "I haven't got detailed information but the works are ongoing, the contractors are in charge of the site. When they are finished the works, they hand over the site. But the Council won't accept it until all works are completed."
