Met Éireann has advised that there remains a risk of flooding in Waterford.

Waterford City and County Council’s severe weather management team attended the National Emergency Co-Ordination Group (NECG) this morning and ground crews have been working throughout the weekend for clean-up operations, a spokesperson said.

After last week’s heavy rainfall, many rivers remain at or above bank-full.

Generally lower rainfall accumulations over the bank holiday weekend have allowed most rivers to stabilise. However, further rainfall overnight on south and east coasts has led to a rise again in water levels.

Heavy rainfall is moving up from the south today, with highest totals in the south and east. Any additional rainfall could trigger further localised flooding given current ground and river conditions.

High spring tides over the coming days, combined with strong winds and surge, may cause wave overtopping and coastal flooding.

High coastal levels will impede river discharge and increase flood risk in low-lying coastal and estuarine areas, especially at high tide.

Waterford City and County Council advises the public to continue to exercise caution, heed public safety advice and avoid driving through flowing or standing water and if the road ahead is flooded, do not enter, turn around and find another route.

Motorists are also reminded to be conscious of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
