Scrutiny over X’s ethically dubious practices has reached Waterford with the Presentation Secondary School deactivating their X account.

Last month, Dublin City Council left the controversial social media platform after it was revealed that the app’s AI ‘Grok’ was being used to digitally undress images of women and children.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, though. After Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022, the app has faced a litany of criticisms due to its widespread distribution of misinformation.

In a post on social media, the Presentation wrote, “This decision has not been taken lightly. After careful consideration, we feel that the platform no longer aligns with our school's values, particularly around creating a safe, respectful and positive online environment for our students and wider community.”

They assured people that they would still be able to access news through other social media accounts and on their website.

A student at the school told WLR FM, “We wanted to make a stand with the victims and show that we’re in support of this.”

She also said, “If you wouldn’t wear it on a t-shirt, don’t say it online.”
