Ireland’s stories in images for 2023 continued its nationwide tour last week at Waterford city's Central Library, where the AIB Press Photographer of the Year Award exhibition went on public display.

It features 114 images in total capturing life, both at home and abroad, during 2023 and showcasing the very best of Irish press photography.

Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Joe Conway officially launched the display last week, directing visitors' attention to a local image on display in the collection, taken by Ryan Byre, capturing Ballygunner’s playing in a heavy downpour during the AIB GAA Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship Quarter-Final against Sarsfields.

Commenting on the exhibition’s visit to Waterford Central Library, David Branigan, President of the Press Photographers Association of Ireland, said, “We are delighted that the exhibition continues its tour of Ireland with a trip to Waterford this April/May.

"We hope that visitors from the local area and beyond will enjoy browsing through the award-winning and highly acclaimed imagery, which demonstrates the hard work and commitment of our Irish press photographers.”

Speaking at the official launch was acclaimed Irish Times photographer Alan Betson, who was awarded the Photographer of the Year Award for 2024, with his portfolio praised by the judges for its huge versatility.

This was the fourth occasion that the Meath resident has won the prestigious title.

Addressing the local crowd, Mr. Betson spoke about his route into photojournalism, and his experience capturing pivotal moments in Irish and global history.

Recently, the Irish Times photographer worked incognito to capture the Dublin riots.

The exhibition is now on display in the Index Gallery, Central Library, Waterford city, for visitors to enjoy until Monday, May 13, 2024.
