The development of 13 residential apartments on Parade Quay is gathering steam, with part 8 of the planning process completed.

At the recent Metropolitan District meeting of Waterford City and County Council, attendees heard updates about the ambitious plan to revitalise the area.

According to the Planning Authority: "The purpose of the proposed development is to deliver 13.x residential units, 6.x retail businesses and create new urban realm spaces within the Viking Triangle."

Senior Executive architect Matthew Partridge gave a thorough overview of the current state of the project, going through the various amendments and timelines.

Councillors Joe Kelly and Cristíona Kiely congratulated the team on their work so far with Parade Quay.

Cllr Kiely said: "It's going to create business opportunities for some of the businesses in the area as well, but I think a key thing it is going to do is create passive surveillance, just more people to and fro in the evening, it's going to make our streets safer."

Cllr Joeanne Bailey enquired about the retail tenants in the area: "I'm just conscious of shopfronts on the Quay."

Mr Partridge replied: "In terms of actually talking to them about moving location post-completion, we're not there yet. That in itself is a few years down the line."

Cllr Donal Barry said: "This is a very positive development for the city centre, it's hugely transformative in that area, most importantly, bringing back housing into the city. I'm delighted to see that the few concerns held by residents have been facilitated as much as possible. I look forward to seeing this project completed."
