Proud Waterford man Michael Lane passes away in Thailand

The late Michael Lane
It is with deep sadness that the family of Michael Lane announces his passing in Thailand on May 22, 2025, at the age of 72.
A proud native of Waterford, Michael was born in 1952 and raised in St. John's Park.
He began his working life as a skilled bricklayer and mason, a trade he practiced with pride and precision.
In 1968, at just 18 years old, he emigrated to Australia during a national drive for skilled tradesmen.
Determined to expand his horizons, Michael pursued higher education and earned a degree in teaching. His academic journey led him to Bangkok University, where he transitioned from construction to the classroom as a lecturer.
It was in Bangkok that he met the love of his life, Heidi. The couple later settled in the southern Thai city of Hat Yai, where they raised a large and loving family of 10 children - five sons and five daughters.
Michael’s life was marked by hard work, resilience, and a deep devotion to family.
Though far from his birthplace, he remained closely connected to his Irish roots and cherished the bonds with his extended family across Ireland and the UK. He came home to his native city twice over the 50 years, in 1979 and 1988.
He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Thomas and Catherine Lane, and by his siblings Kathleen, Philomena, Patricia, John and Aeneas.
He leaves behind his devoted wife Heidi and their 10 children, as well as his surviving siblings: Thomas (Galway), James “Jumbo” (Ballybeg), Frank (London), Davie (Ferrybank), Esther O’Neill (London), and Barbara Rochford (New Ross).
Michael was cremated in Hat Yai following a funeral service attended by family and friends, with his brother Davie and sister Barbara present to represent those unable to travel.
May he rest in peace.
