New CCTV sees huge number of litter fines issued in Waterford
Bags dumped at bring banks have been a huge problem for the council for a while now.
Waterford City and County Council issued 86 litter fines in the first six weeks of the new CCTV enforcement system.
The cameras were installed at ten locations in the Metropolitan district in November.
The aim is to detect and deter illegal dumping and the plan is rotate them around the area.
Waterford City and County Council Senior Executive Officer Dawn Wallace said that bring banks seems to be a favourite for litterbugs.

“A significant number of these incidents are happening at our bring banks.
"People need to understand that it is not acceptable to leave items on the ground beside bring banks. Once material is left on the ground, it cannot be recycled and ends up going to a landfill.
At the end of last year, the council reviewed the footage and issued the fines.
The council advise people that if a bring bank is full go to another and they warn that just leaving material is littering and can incur a fine.

But according to Ms Wallace, some people are not getting the message.
“Most surprising was that some people have been fined on multiple occasions for dumping the same bring banks, coming back again and again, and leaving items on the ground.
“That is not acceptable. The Council relies on the goodwill of communities and businesses hosting our bring banks. Continued dumping at these sites can make people reluctant to host them, which will affect the entire community and our recycling goals,” said Ms Wallace.
