Mother hunts intruder out of her home during burglary

The man appeared in court willing to hand over €1,000 in compensation.

On July 27, 2025, at approximately 2am, a burglary took place at a family home in the Tramore area.

The intruder, 28-year-old Nathan Kirwan, of 55 Ard Daire, Ferrybank, arrived at the scene and threw a rock through a door window.

The man entered the home looking for his then girlfriend, who wasn't there at the time.

Present inside the house was a mother and her young daughter.

The man attempted to go up the stairs but was dragged downstairs by the girl’s mother.

The woman said, “her instincts as a mother kicked in”.

Along with the broken window, tiles and a chair in the house were also damaged.

The woman said that the intruder had cut his hands upon entry, and there was blood left on the walls of the house.

Victim impact

The woman described the incident as “aggressive and frightening”.

She said it was only her and her younger daughter “vulnerably” alone in the house on the night.

The incident has had serious ongoing emotional impacts on the family, she said.

Defence

The court heard that the man is no longer in a relationship with the woman’s daughter, and that their family “have nothing to fear”.

The man appeared in court willing to hand over €1,000 in compensation.

Judge John Cheatle ordered €2,000 to be handed over to cover the cost of repairs to the home and as compensation for the trauma incurred.

The man has until November 10 to accrue the funds. If he does so, he will receive a suspended sentence.
