Labour councillor and Mayor of Waterford City & County Council Seamus Ryan blasted conditions on the Inner Ring Road at a recent metropolitan council meeting.

Mayor Ryan described the .5km stretch from the Inner Ring Road to the Folly as “breaking up pretty bad” and bemoaned the lack of progress on an issue raised “three or four months ago”.

He labelled an Active Travel Scheme proposal that could see a 2km two-way bike lane installed on one side of the road from the Inner Ring Road to the Passage Road as “disastrous”.

“Why would we have cycle lanes going on the wrong side of the road? That, to me, just does not make any traffic sense,” Mayor Ryan said.

“It's going to be unsafe for cyclists, it's going to be unsafe for motorists, and it's going to be unsafe for pedestrians.”

The council’s road planning department said they have agreed to review the Active Travel Scheme, with funding earmarked for the Inner Ring Road’s resurfacing in 2026.
