Locals rally to object to construction of telecommunications mast in Passage East

Close to 200 residents from Passage East have signed a petition objecting to the construction of a telecommunications mast in the area.

Close to two hundred residents from Passage East have signed a petition objecting to the construction of a telecommunications mast in the Crooke area.

A public meeting was also held last week, with residents and local councillors expressing concerns regarding the proposed erection of the mast.

The landowner of the site proposed for the mast's construction was in attendance at the meeting.

The planning application was recently submitted by On Tower Ireland Limited, and includes provision for the installation of an 18 metre multi-user lattice type telecommunications support structure carrying antenna and dishes enclosed within a 2.4 metre high palisade fenced compound.

Locals spoke about the mast's potential to impact health and safety.

The petition says: “There is growing concern about the potential health risks associated with electromagnetic radiation from telecommunications masts.

“While the scientific community continues to study the long-term effects, many residents feel that placing such infrastructure near homes, schools, and recreational areas is a risk that should not be taken lightly.”

Locals also have concerns that the mast may have negative impacts on the local environment and property values in the area.

They say that there has been insufficient consultation with local residents regarding the project and that the community has not been consulted with about the proposed location, its potential risks, or the decision-making process.

The petition adds that this "is not in line with the values of local democracy”.

Locals are calling on local authorities to reject the application, engage in dialogue with the community to address concerns, and prioritise the health, safety and wellbeing of residents in all future planning decisions.

A decision on the planning application is expected from Waterford City & County Council by January 11.
