History was made at the weekend as the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore joyfully marked the ordination of a new Permanent Deacon.

The historic ceremony took place on Sunday, January 25.

The ceremony took place not in the Cathedral, but in St Paul’s Church, Lisduggan, where Rev. David Cooney was ordained by Bishop Phonsie Cullinan during what was a deeply uplifting celebration.

David’s faith journey is rooted in the strong example of his father, who nurtured his belief after the early loss of David’s mother.

Like many people, his younger years were marked by struggle, drifting into an undisciplined lifestyle that included alcohol and substance abuse.

However, David’s life took a decisive turn when, through God’s grace, he met the woman who would become his wife, Úna.

During the 1990s, David found further healing and strength through the power of the Holy Spirit, particularly within Charismatic prayer groups.

While battling depression, he again experienced God’s presence through time spent in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

Gradually, his involvement in parish life deepened, and his relationship with God grew stronger.

Devotion to Our Lady and to Divine Mercy became significant supports on his spiritual journey.

David brings with him the lived experience of marriage and family life.

As a Permanent Deacon, he is called to live out his vocation in three different ways: service of the Word in preaching, service at the altar, service in charity such as serving the poor and marginalised.

However, David’s primary vocation, like the vocation of every Christian is holiness lived out.

In David’s case, that's through being a husband, father and grandfather.

"We extend every good wish and blessing to Rev. David Cooney as he begins his ministry as a Permanent Deacon, praying that God will guide and strengthen him in this new chapter of service," said a spokesperson for the Diocese.
